Tufts University
Why Tufts
What interests you about this college? (Tufts in this case)
Tufts is the most balanced school I have seen in my "college search." I do not necessarily want a campus inside a city (Columbia, University of Chicago), or a campus proud of the nothingness that surrounds it (Bard, Bowdoin). Tufts is the perfect compromise between the two: a few subway stops away from one of the most exciting cities in the world, and yet atop a peaceful hill in the suburbs. I want a school intent on academic intensity, tight in acceptance percentages, and yet not exceptionally proud of the name it bears. I'll pass on "Rah, rah, Harvard, Harvard!" I want a school with excellent research opportunities: Tufts' new library has "bowled students over." I want a school with excellent creative writing and literature programs that does not neglect foreign languages or international studies: Tufts' two most popular majors are English and International Relations. And plus, Tufts does not let any individual department fall below par, which is excellent for an economics dilettante like myself. Most applications ask for "the most appealing part of the school," but one chooses based on the totality of the school. Tufts is excellent for me from all angles.
