Strike.
I turned and faced the most cheerful and excited group of students. All different kinds of students on one team–happy to be there, socialize, and watch me get my first strike. I tried to hold back a smile, but it was impossible. I’m a terrible bowler, and I do not enjoy the sport, but the friendships I have made and the lessons I have learned while participating have left me with no regrets.
I originally learned about corollary bowling from an older friend after looking for something new to try in the winter of my sophomore year. I had never heard of it, and when I asked what it was, she explained that I would go bowling and help special-needs students. Back then, this was enough for me. I had only bowled once before, but being able to go twice a week sounded fun; I was on board immediately. After convincing some friends, we all added our names and emails to the new members list.
When the time came for our first practice, I was admittedly fairly nervous. I have always played sports and been willing to try new things.
