[Im]Possible Things

How did you first learn about Rice University and what motivated you to apply?


“I believe as many as [three] impossible things before breakfast.” – Alice in Wonderland

One: I can save the world.

Converting tattered t-shirts into headbands, I am already looking ahead to “upcycling” tires. Additionally, I give as much time as possible to the local food bank. Now, I hope to continue these activities in college. In fact, I originally discovered Rice while researching schools with service learning study abroad, because I hope to enhance my cultural awareness while still contributing to society.

Two: Peers will vigorously debate with me: over TV shows, politics, anything and everything.

As of now, I often chat with teachers after school—not due to social ineptness with my peers, but rather in order to glean thoughtful conversations. From fracking to alternative energy, we discuss a spectrum of issues. The Rice Thresher illustrates Rice students’ vibrancy and awareness of social concerns. Through articles describing Rice Art Gallery and innovations in science, the student writers make it clear that they are passionate and involved. I can easily envision myself thriving in and contributing to such a community of thinkers and doers.

Three: I will find a home away from home.
