Anthony Hecht: Selected Poems Metaphors and Similes

“Blizzard in the Bloodstream” - “Transparent Man”

In “Transparent Man” the speaker likens Leukaemia to a ‘blizzard in the bloodstream”. This metaphor sums up the brutality of Leukaemia and constructs an imagery of an ailment that overpowers the patient’s organs and lymphocytes.

Hall of Fame - “Transparent Man”

In “The Transparent Man” the speaker informs Mrs. Curtis, “This view, you see, has become my Hall of Fame.” The view that the speaker is referring to consists of trees such as sycamores and beeches which the speaker has dubbed “Beethoven, and Kepler”. Ordinarily, Halls of Fame pay homage to people based on their ingenious accomplishments in fields such as sports. The speaker’s allusion to ‘Hall of Fame’ proves that the speaker is wrapped up in the atmosphere around her as it is the only source of diversion that is accessible.
