Kindred spirit

A person with whom you easily see eye-to-eye, who knows you well and loves you well.

Ambition

A strong desire to do or to achieve something.

Murmur

Something said in a soft, low voice, usually difficult to hear.

Passionate

Showing strong feelings about something.

Milestone

An event marking a significant development.

Fragrant

Having a pleasant or sweet smell.

Bosom friend

In the words of Anne: "An intimate friend... a really kindred spirit to whom I can confide my inmost soul."

Alabaster brow

The forehead of a particularly pale but beautiful/handsome young face.

Beau

A boyfriend.

Epoch

A momentous occasion in one's life that marks a significant time or event.

Puffed sleeves

The fashion of the time in which Anne of Green Gables was written, these sleeves contained lots of material gathered so that they puffed out, usually from the shoulder to elbow but also from the shoulder to wrist.

The reaper whose name is death

This is a biblical reference to death personified.

Pruned

Reduced the extent of something.

Sanctify

To declare a place holy, or to purify something.

Rumple

To give a creased or ruffled appearance.

Traverse

To travel across or through.

Ingenuously

Honestly or candidly, sometimes in a way that seems silly.

Ejaculate

When referring to speech, this word means to say something quickly and suddenly.

Gable

The part of a wall that encloses the end of a pitched roof.

Queer

In this time period, queer meant strange or odd.
