Enacting a scene: monologues
Kind of Activity:
Performance
Objective:
To understand Kushner's text as a performed work
Common Core Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.4; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.6
Structure:
Much of Kushner's language in Angels in America is complex, idiosyncratic to each character, and full of cultural, literary, and historical allusions. Performing this text in such a way that it sounds like a real human speaking it can be a challenge for actors, and performing it allows actors to discover nuance in the language that is not immediately apparent from the page. In this exercise students will prepare and act a monologue from the play.
