Amos Fortune, Free Man is essentially a seminal work in the realm of biographical novels and chronicles the life and adventures of a young prince who is taken to America as a slave, and must buy his own freedom.
Amos, the protagonist, lives in peace until there is a village raid and his father is massacred. At-mun (the actual name of Amos) is sold to a man called Caleb Copeland with a new identity of Amos. He defies his slave status and fights to earn his freedom. After the death of his previous owner, he is sold to Ichabod Richardson who trains him to become a skilled worker.
He is soon able to buy his freedom and gets married to a woman named Lily. Lily passes away and he marries Lydia, another African woman. Lydia also dies. He then marries Violet, but he gets frustrated with his wife for stealing his money and climbs Mt. Monadnock in search of an answer from God. He eventually gets the answer he has been looking for and forgives her.
It is revealed that she had stolen money to prevent him from providing aid to another woman. Amos is finally able to buy his own land and is able to create a place where he can work as a tanner at the age of 80.
