Amends

Amends Character List

Speaker

The speaker in "Amends" is largely absent. The poem is written in the third person, and the speaker's account of the landscape is so all-encompassing that we get little sense of where she, specifically, is positioned within it.

The Moonlight

Rich personifies the moonlight as an entity offering comfort and restitution to the damaged land/people the poem describes. The moonlight is described as beautiful, gentle, and affectionate, but unable to enact any real change.

The sleepers

Rich portrays the sleepers with a lot of tenderness. Their exhaustion fills the trailers where they sleep. Although it is not made explicit, the moon's desire to make "amends" with them suggests that they are the victims of injustice.
