The Purposes and Values of the Rocking Chair in A. M. Klein’s “The Rocking Chair” College
Abraham Moses Klein was a Canadian Jewish poet, journalist, lawyer, short story writer and novelist. He was originally an immigrant in Canada. The topics he mostly considered in his poems were Canadian cultural heritage and traditions. These appear in “The Rocking Chair” as well. This poem first and foremost illustrates the purposes of the given object itself and how it stands closely in connection with the concept and values of families and the province of Quebec. Even a sense of belonging is depicted here. However, the question arises that what type of a family is discussed in the poem. Therefore, how the chair relates to self and common identity and to the poet himself are the most crucial aspects to be analyzed.
The poem was published in 1948 as a part of a book entitled The Rocking Chair: And Other Poems. The poem is divided into four 8-line stanzas; within those, the object stands in the center, and it is connected to an interpretation of family. The rhyme scheme cannot be categorized obviously in the poem; it is not consistent. The poem is structurally well-constructed, it has a continuous flow.
