The Weather
The group suffer through extreme weather during the novel. Their plane has crashed in the Andes Mountains, meaning the weather is freezing. They also suffer through natural disasters such like avalanches. The imagery of weather is key in their struggle to survive and is also the subject of much admiration due to its immense beauty.
God
The imagery of God in this text is key in suggesting a sense of hope for the characters. God is seemingly present in their surroundings, and as many of the characters are religious, they rely and depend on this presence to carry on going. As such, the imagery of God represents a sense of hope, and the will to survive despite the odds.
Nature
The plane crashes in the middle of the rugged Andes mountains, a freezing and barren landscape that provides little hope of survival. Nature is presented as a fearful force in this novel, representing the emotional, psychological and physical obstacles the group faces in trying to survive.
