Alabama Moon Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

The cap

Moon's cap symbolizes his moment of defeat. When Moon tries to cross the bridge, the police constable, Mr. Sanders, arrests him and puts him in the police car. However, Sanders slaps Moon's cap and leaves it behind. Moon feels angry when his cap is lost because it represents his defeat. Moon's arrest kills his dream of travelling to Alaska to fulfill his father's dream.

The rough shelter

The rough shelter where Moon lives in the forest symbolizes his lifestyle. Moon lived with his father in the forest for his entire life. Moon's father hated the government and interacting with society members because he found peace in the forest. After the death of Moon's parents, he remained in the wild living in temporary rough shelters because that is the only life he knew.

The motif of the wheelbarrow

When Moon starts his dangerous journey to Alaska, he loads all his possessions on the wheelbarrow. Readers learn that Moon does not have a briefcase or a descent bag where he can put his possessions before setting on the long journey. Consequently, the wheelbarrow is a motif that represents Moon's poverty status. Since Moon's parents lived in the forest for their entire lives, they did not get access to a decent life or acquire luxury materials such as briefcases.
