Airplane! Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Fish Bones

Dr. Rumack tells the stewardess that it is the fish that is making everyone sick. We then see the bones remaining from the pilots meal. It is a symbol that he is going to suffer from the sever food poisoning that is occurring on board and there will be no one left to pilot the aircraft.

Pinocchio

We see Dr. Rumack's nose grow as he "levels" with the passengers aboard the seemingly doomed flight. His nose growing is a symbol that he is blatantly lying to them all.

Boring

Striker can't stop talking about Elaine to all of the passengers he sits next to, and they all choose to kill themselves rather than continue to listen. This is a symbol that Striker's conversation is so hard to stand they can't do it any more.

Drinking Problem

Striker and Elaine's relationship ending has caused him to have a drinking problem--every time he tries to take a drink he only pours it all over himself. This is a symbol of how Striker is so distraught over the woman he loves that he cannot function normally.

Pouring Sweat

As Striker is attempting to land the airplane, we see his perspiration increase until he is pouring with sweat. This is a symbol that although he is a pilot he is terrified, because he's never flown a plane with four engines before.
