"Against the Pleasure Principle" and Other Stories Irony

The Irony of Circumcision

Men advocate for female circumcision as it guarantees that the women they marry are virgins who have never had sexual intercourse all their lives. However, circumcision does not contribute to sexual satisfaction. This leads to the question: do men get pleasure from making love to women who cannot feel anything?

The Irony of Dahabo circumcising her daughter

Dahabo confesses to her doctor that prior to going to the USA she circumcised her daughter. One would expect Dahabo to protect her daughter from circumcision. The confession is ironic because Dahabo, despite g being kind of civilized, has not acknowledged that her action is detrimental to her daughter.

The Irony of the correlation between Virginity and Decent Marriage

According to the Somalian culture Virginity, which is safeguarded through circumcision, is the only determinant in the decency of a woman’s marriage. In other words, it is a belief that girls who are not virgin cannot have a gratifying and decent marriage. The belief is ironical as the lack o f pleasure during sex, which becomes inherent in the life of a circumcised woman, does not amount to decency. What decency supersedes sexual fulfillment ( which is a gaol in marriage)? Correlating decency to painful sex is a causal fallacy.
