The owner of the dogs

In the poem "Actaeon’’ the main character is an unnamed male who owns the three dogs also mentioned in the poem. The male raised the three dogs and got to know them really well. The man was proud of his dogs and would go hunting with them frequently. In the end, he is hurt by his dogs because of a reason not mentioned in the poem.

Anthee, Philomel, Chloe

The three names appear in the third stanza in the poem "Actaeon’’ and are used in relationship with the three dogs owned by the main character in the poem. The dogs were raised by the male character and the narrator mentions how the dogs were extremely valuable and had many qualities. The dogs eventually attacked and killed their own master.

In the poem entitled "After a Greek Proverb’’, the only character mentioned in the poem is the general "we’’. The term is used here in a general way to make reference to humanity as a whole.

Lady Sleep

In the poem entitled "Another Lullaby for Insomniacs’’, the main character is sleep, portrayed here as being a female. Sleep is described as being a ruthless woman who can’t accept to be tied to a single man and thus she goes from one bed to another, leaving her lovers on their own. Through this, she hurts the men who are involved with her but she does not suffer.

The Hunter

In the poem "Arrowhead Hunting’’, the main character is the Hunter who loses the tip of his arrowhead while hunting. The poem notes how he searched for the tip but never found it. The tip was later found by someone who did not know its value.
