Adaptation Irony

Adaptation Irony

Quick Sale

Donald has taken Robert McKee's Story Workshop and begins to write his screenplay, which Charlie finds ridiculous. Ironically, Donald's screenplay, his first, sells for high six to low seven figures.

Orchid Thief

Orlean has written about a man who is attempting to go after a rare and beautiful flower, the ghost orchid. She makes him out to be a beauty hunter. Ironically, he becomes her lover and he's after the flower because he can make it into a drug that he can sell.

Success

Charlie is fresh off his hit film Being John Malkovich, having found success in the movie industry. Ironically, he's now more insecure than ever as he believes he could potentially be a fraud if this screenplay doesn't work.

Story

Charlie believes that Robert McKee's Story Seminar is a waste of time and money - that McKee is ripping people off. Ironically, once Donald's script sells he puts himself on a plane to New York and eventually caves and attends the seminar.

A Hit

Charlie has become the toast of the town after writing Being John Malkovich - so much so that studio exec, Valerie, believes that he is great. Ironically, before she can say this to him, Charlie, in his mind, is telling himself that he can't do this and is a phony.
