At first glance, Clark's claim that Uncle Howard sent the letter a day late seems like an irrelevant detail. In your opinion, what does the statement suggest about Howard? What does it suggest about Clark's relationship with Howard? What does it suggest about Georgiana's life with Howard?
Later in the story, we learn that Howard was idle and shiftless when he met Georgiana. The fact that he waited so long to send the letter indicates that Howard might not have grown any more more responsible.
