Sasha's Apartment
Sasha brings her date to her New York apartment at the end of their subpar first date. He remarks at her rare bathtub, which is in the middle of her studio. She tells him she showers at the gym, but through his observations of her place, we are led to see it, as well. Jennifer Egan further uses imagery to show Sasha's array of stolen items.
Concert
Jennifer Egan shows concerts throughout the novel in order to demonstrate why she writes about musicians in the novels. Through concert scenes, she is able to show how people stand together during concerts, interact with their friends in a state of performance, and experience the event differently when under the influence of alcohol or illicit drugs. Her imagery uses the observation of several individuals, each of whom has a different, and often tumultuous, relationship with either the performers or who they accompany to the concert.
Wind Farm
Later in the novel, Sasha's husband accompanies their son to the desert in order to discuss the state of affairs in their lives. Distinct imagery shows this moment as an indicator of the futurism of Sasha's later life and the type of interaction that can occur between a father and son in the near-future. The book was written before wind power adoption at a large scale, so the imagery is especially striking.
Pauses in Songs
Through Sasha's son's Powerpoint, the reader receives imagery of songs' pauses and their attributes. He writes a review of different pauses, along with their lengths and meanings, for her and her husband; this review is in itself visual but also uses auditory images to emphasize the importance of and meaning of pauses in songs both classic and contemporary.
