A Town Like Alice Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

The well

The well symbolizes Paget's appreciation for the people and community that raised and protected her from war. Alice returns to her native town when she is 35 and builds a well to solve the perennial water shortage that has affected her people for centuries. The locals thank Paget for her appreciation and humanity to serve the less fortunate in society. The appreciation Paget gets from her people motivates her to transform Willstown to look like Alice Town, which is highly developed.

Alligator shoes

The alligator shoes that Paget makes symbolize the viable industry for the local people. Paget makes leather shoes to pass the time, but she gets intrigued when the local people come and ask her to start a shoe-making industry. Fascinated by the idea of a viable local industry, Paget seeks the help of Pack, an expert in the leather industry, who helps her to establish the largest leather industry in town.

Willstown

Willstown is a symbol of possibilities. The first time Paget arrives in Willstown, she desires to transform it to look like the town of Alice. However, no one believes her imagination when Paget shares her dreams with locals. Paget discovers that the people in Wellston are hard-working but do not have opportunities to transform their lives. After Paget gets her inheritance, she starts to develop the town slowly. Paget started by building schools and health facilities. Later, Alice builds industries and initiates other businesses that employ thousands of people. After several years of development, Willstown has become a major investment hub for investors and even looks better than Alice Town.
