A Thousand Years of Good Prayers Metaphors and Similes

Miss Casablanca

Sansan has been called by the name Miss Casablanca by her students because she shows them the movie of Casablanca again and again. The students get fed up of watching the movie and they make fun of her behind her back. Sansan was betrayed by her fiancé who claims to love her. She helped her close friend and asked her fiancé to marry her. They agreed that Tu would divorce Min after a year and Sansan and Tu would get marry but Tu and Min betrayed Sansan. She endured the burden of infidelity and perhaps she used to relate her troubled past with Casablanca that is why she used to show this movie to her students in order to inculcate some lesson in them.

Diamond Bachelor

The metaphor of a ‘diamond bachelor’ has been used for Han by his mother owing to his American nationality and his handsome earnings in American. His mother believes that he is a man, who is the desire of most of the girls. She tries to find a potential partner for her son and shows him pictures of different girls. She thinks that his son is perfect so he must choose his wife according to his wish.

Extra

The title of the story is a metaphor for Granny Lin, who is considered as unnecessary by everyone. The people who surrounded her remain busy in their lives, but she was not considered a part by anyone. She tried to become a part of old Tang’s life but after his death she was thrown out of his inheritance like a tissue paper. She was not given anything by his family. When she got a job in school, she did her best to help Kang from being ridiculed but she was blamed by the authorities and again she was dismissed from her job because the owners consider her as ‘extra’. She had no value in anyone’s life.
