After quitting his studies, Fredric went to live the life of pleasure that he desired. Fredric initiated several projects, rebut he left them mid-way due to a loss of interest.

Madame realizes that Fredrick can do anything for her, and she decides t exploit him financially. Besides the expensive gifts and clothing that Madame gets from Fredric, she gangs up with her husband to get more of Fredric's money. For instance, Madame and her husband use Fredric to get money from moneylenders, and the burden of repayment is shifted to him. His undying love blinds Fredric, and he continues to get exploited by Madame and her husband. Therefore, Madame does not love Fredric, but she is determined to milk him dry.

    Dussardier is a figurative character who represents true friendship. The novel largely focuses on the significance of true friendships. Fredric has many friends, but they are only for convenience. The novel represents the reality in the actual world where friends are ready to only benefit from others and offer nothing in return. For instance, Fredric is a lonely character because friends desert him when he does not fulfill their requests and demands. Deslauriers is Fredric's close friend, but he walks out of him when he fails to secure a loan. Similarly, Hussonet intentionally taints Fredric's name in a publication to make him look bad. The only person who stands with Fredric in all circumstances is Dussardier.
