    Creative Writing

    Objective:

    Students will develop a deeper understanding of the characters by imaging their lives before the start of the play

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.4, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.9-10.1, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.3

    Structure:

    Students will write a 2- to 3-page scene that takes place ten years before the first scene in the play. Beneatha is ten years old, Walter Jr. and Ruth are in their early 20s, and Travis is either an infant or still unborn. Walter Lee Sr. is still alive.
