A Queer Mother For The Nation Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Gabriela Mistral (Symbol)

Gabriela Mistral is remembered by many because she is a symbol of revolution in Latin America. Mistral's literary work won her a Nobel Peace Prize because she brought a positive revolution in her community. Despite not having children of her own, she valued the entire community's children as her own and acted as a perfect mother figure.

Masculine personality (symbol)

The author uses masculine personality as an emblem of bravery. The author argues that Gabriela Mistral had a masculine personality because she was fearless, brave, and courageous. Mistral advocated for positive change, and she did everything within her power to achieve her goals. However, despite having a masculine personality, she was a good mother to those that surrounded her.

Photography (symbol)

Photography is used figuratively to represent Mistral’s life history and her private life. Mistral’s photography reveals that she was an open-minded woman who criticized racial and gender discrimination. Despite having a masculine personality and receiving criticism, she remained collaborative with the government to push her equality agenda.

The symbolism of western capitalism

Western capitalism symbolizes racial discrimination and superiority. In her writings, Mistral categorically illustrates how the western capitalist culture views Latin Americans as inferior people who deserve less in society. However, Mistral insists that the people of Latin America must be proud of their culture and color because they were created in the image of God.

The motif of love

The author depicts Mistral as a model in society that people and the upcoming generation should emulate. Mistral’s private life and experiences demonstrate that love has no boundaries and people should be appreciated as they are. Mistral is a childless woman with a masculine personality, but that does not hinder her from showing motherly love to those around her.
