A Promised Land Themes

Foreign Policy

The memoir touches upon many of the foreign policies covered under Obama’s presidential reign. It includes a look into Obama’s thoughts during the financial crisis of 2008, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill (2010) and Operation Neptune’s Spear (2011), which saw the death of former Al-Qaeda leader, Osama bin Laden.

Being Black in America

The book also focuses on Obama having made history as the first and only Black president of the United States and the global impact this had. Obama shares his fears of the great expectations placed before him to be a game-changer and inspire "hope and change." He touches upon the importance of ensuring a respect for all races in order to truly make America a great nation.

Senator to President

The book touches upon the course of Obama’s political journey throughout his lifetime. It begins the start of his interest in politics by being elected to the Illinois Senate in 1996 and gaining favor across the nation. The book covers his Iowa caucus victory speech and his ultimate election as the 44th president of the United States.
