A Place in the Sun Themes

Love and Relationships

George Eastman, the main character in this movie is involved in a romantic relationship with Alice Tripp. Both George and Alice meet in a company as co-workers and fall in love. This is contrary to the company’s policies, which bar employees from getting into love affairs. Alice is seriously in love but George has not made up his mind. The film portrays George as a philanderer, who also falls in love with Angela Vickers. Love and relationship drive the plot of this film.

The Theme of Tragedy

The theme of tragedy is observed where Alice Tripp drowns on a lake. George tricks Alice and takes her to the lake. Alice is happy to see George becoming a responsible man. Unknown to her, George has other plans. Alice keeps on talking about her future dreams. However, when the boat capsizes, George runs away leaving her to drown. Such a tragedy leads to the death of the two. Alice drowns and dies on the lake while George is sentenced to death where he is executed.

The Conflict of Social Class

The difference between the rich and the poor causes tensions among the people depicted in the film. Alice is from a poor background and she threatens to expose George who comes from a middle-class family. George doesn’t love Alice because he considers her as poor. Indeed, George wants to dump Alice and fall in love with Angela, who also hails from a wealthy family.

Betrayal and Hypocrisy

George betrays Alice and is hypocritical of the fact that Alice is pregnant. When George meets Alice, he argues that he is in love with her. However, that is not the case. George starts cheating on Alice with Angela. The cheating portrays betrayal and hypocrisy because Alice is in real love. Ultimately, this betrayal has consequences.

Hard Work vs. Success

The film explores how hard work can lead to a successful career. George is working hard in his uncle’s company with the desire to achieve success. Definitely, he begins to move up the corporate ladder and he becomes a supervisor. Though his ending is not good, his hard work helped him to climb the corporate ladder. This shows that hard work pays.
