"A Martian Sends a Postcard Home" and Other Poems Summary

A Martian Sends a Postcard Home

As the title indicates, this poem is written from the perspective of a Martian that visits Earth. In the poem, the Martian tries to explain the phenomena it sees on Earth, such as books, toilets, and rain, all discussed in a postcard home to its planet. However, due to the Martian's unfamiliarity with these concepts, they are presented in a strange way that makes them seem exotic and puzzling.

The Onion, Memory

This poem is about a divorced narrator who has recently reconciled with his former spouse and struck up a friendship with her. However, as they spend time together, the narrator finds it is the his old memories that makes him cry, not his former spouse's renewed presence in his life, because of their familiarity.

In the Kalahari Desert

This poem is about a doomed expedition of missionaries who set off into the Kalahari Desert. One by one they and their Zulu guide succumb to the heat of the desert and perish on the journey.
