Love and separation
Love is the strongest force in the world. There were always order and rigid control in life of the young Ove. However, one day Sonja abruptly appeared in Ove’s life like a whirlwind. She was the most beloved woman for the rest of Ove’s life. His life began to change. Ove was much happier. They were able to move mountains together. However, as in real life, there were unforeseen circumstances in this book that prevented Ove and Sonja from being happy. He lost his love and then the main hero retired into his shell and put his guard up against the whole world; he became rude, dry, but in the depths of his soul, his true impulses could not “sit around” for a long time. The lost love broke his heart.
Death
Death is a strange thing. Many characters of the novel live their whole lives as if there is no death at all. Death is one of the main motivations for their existence, and some of them simply cannot go on without a sense of the everyday presence of death. Otherwise, they would not appreciate its opposite. Others are solicitous about death so much that they are sitting near the consulting room to visit the doctor before death announces its arrival. Ove is a man, who does not fear death, when it will take him away. On the contrary, he is afraid to live, because the most terrible thing is when death will forget about him, dooming Ove to loneliness.
Friendship and mutuality
Ove has so many friends that maybe every reader will envy him. When you begin to read the novel, you may sense that the life of the main character is terrible. He is a lonely, unneeded old man, who lost his family and the only gleam of hope – his wife Sonja. However, gradually the reader learns that he is wrong. Ove is not alone anyway. People who love and respect Ove – his new neighbors Parvaneh and Patrick, an old friend Rune with his wife Anita and a cat, whom Ove finds, surround him. Even the children of his neighbors call his grandfather and due to this “grandfather”, Ove stops his attempts to die. This support of friends helps him to continue to live.
