The rain shows that nature cannot be conquered. Despite the conquest of nature that Niel admires in the Captain and the exploitation of nature that he sees in Ivy Peters, nature remains unbeaten. Captain Peters will die and Ivy Peters will try to grow wheat, but nature always does what it will.
