Andrew Westwood
The novel begins with the trial of Andrew Westwood. He is on trial for the murder of Sydney Vane, which is a well-known event in the local community. We discover that nobody had witnessed him actually commit the crime, but due to his reputation, people assumed that he was capable of such a terrible act.
Sydney Vane
Sydney Vane is well-liked a gentleman who had sent Westwood to jail for snaring rabbits. Later, he was discovered dead with shots through his heart.
Witnesses
During the trial, a number of witnesses give their statements. A few different people state that they had seen Westwood around the scene of the crime, on the night of Vane's murder.
