A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland Characters

A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland Character List

Samuel Johnson

Johnson, as he keeps a journal of his travels, places himself and his companion, Boswell, as protagonists of a somewhat sensationalized narrative. Johnson is enjoying celebrity status for his authorship at this point, so he writes with full confidence that the public will be amused by his notes. He continually reports astonishment as Scotland shatters his expectations for civilization and reform. Expecting a barbarous wilderness, Johnson continually places his own perception of the Scottish people onto the reality of the situation. His prejudices become especially apparent when Johnson writes about the Earse language.

James Boswell

Boswell is the organizer of this journey. He’s planning to write a biography upon Johnson and invites his subject on this trip as a sort of opportunity to conduct research and establish rapport. He shares none of Johnson’s preconceptions about Scotland, having his own manner a little further in the south which they eventually visit.

Lord Monboddo

Lord Monboddo has earned himself a reputation among the English for his multiple jury appearances. He’s reputed to be a very forward thinker and somewhat of a philosopher, but his appearance in farming clothes to greet his guests astonishes Johnson. He’s a man who has adapted his situation to his intellect but who feels no need to forgo the comforts of practicality and custom.
