The book chronicles the history of humankind through six distinct beverages, beginning with beer. Beer was invented earliest, as a result of the Agricultural Revolution. Next came wine, then spirits, coffee, tea, and Coca-Cola. According to Standage, all of these beverages had a profound impact on history.
