A Garden of Anchors: Selected Poems Character List

"You’’ in the poem "OFFERINGS’’

You is the pronoun used in the poem mentioned above as a way to make reference to the person of power who gives out presents to the rest of humanity. Those presents however are extremely weak and even worthless, not having any real use for the people who receive them. ‘’You’’ could be used here as a general term to make reference to either a political power or even a religious one.

"We’’ in the poem "OFFERINGS’’

The pronoun "we’’ is used just as in the case of "you’’ in a rather ambiguous term. We can assume however that it is used to make reference to a certain group of people, maybe to the humanity as a whole.

The person sitting in the front seat of the car

The person mentioned above is the first character in the poem "IF YOUR MIRROR BREAKS’’. The person is advised by the narrator to stop the car and to get out of it as fast as possible to avoid a possible tragedy.

The second person in the poem "IF YOUR MIRROR BREAKS’’

The second person remains unknown just like the first one but the manner in which the mirror breaks is completely different from the first case. For the second person, the mirror breaks while he is holding it and as a result, the shards of glass enter the person’s body through the veins, affecting his personality completely.

The person on the highway

The third person mentioned in the poem "IF YOUR MIRROR BREAKS’’ has to deal with the broken mirror while on the highway. Because of the location, the person has to stop what he is doing and to expect bad things happening to him for at least seven years.

The narrator in the poem "WHERE THERE’S A WALL’’

In this poem, the narrator finds himself facing a wall as well. The wall is described as being extremely high, its top in the clouds. From one side of the wall, the narrator can hear the voice of a person he knows, someone who maybe managed to cross to the other side.

The unknown character in the poem "WHERE THERE’S A WALL’’

The unknown character is on the other side of the wall and is talking to the narrator. It is possible that the person in question already crossed over the wall.
