Hearing
A sense of hearing is depicted when Custis says, “I have never heard someone scream so loud in my life.” The imagery is significant because Boobie’s loud scream shows his pain. When the pain persists, Boobie parks his car and pours Gatorade on his pants to cool the pain. Boobie is a criminal; sometimes, he can start screaming, thinking the police are after him. While driving, Boobie screams loudly, which makes Curl and Custis scared.
Sight
Curl’s description of the cow along the highway depicts a sense of sight. Curtis says, "Look at the big dumb cow. And that one, too. Look at him. He is so big and dumb." The imagery clearly shows the cow's size in the reader's mind. More importantly, the imagery shows that Curl enjoys her trip because it is adventurous. While driving a long distance, moving from one town to the other, Curl enjoys the experience along the road, and one thing that catches her attention is the scene of a big cow.
The imagery of escape
The narrator describes how he escapes from the Motley's dilapidated residence to gain freedom. The narrator says, "When I came up from the basement, I peeked away the newspaper, pushed the Louisville Slugger aside, crawled through the dumdum Hole, and ran through Rockdale." The imagery shows the risk the narrator had to take to secure his freedom from his oppressor. Motley defiled the narrator and filmed the sexual activity for commercialization purposes.
