A benchmark or standard by which a judgment, comparison or standard can be measured.

An amount that is adequate for a need and may even contain a surplus.

militia

Civilians trained as soldiers who do not belong to an actual organized national military.

principles

Moral rules or values which guide one's actions.

providence

Characterized by a trust in divine guidance to ensure one’s actions are righteous and just.

notwithstanding

Despite what just happened or was said.

arbitrary

Randomly chosen or occurring.

infer

To conclude or deduce without being given explicit information or meaning.

vanguard

The forefront or front line of attack or a social movement.

compensate

Fair payment for the cost of something; not necessary restricted to actual currency.

confluence

A convergence of various elements.

laud

To celebrate the actions of someone.

egregious

Exceptionally bad, usually within the context of judgment.

baffled

Utterly confused and bewildered.

quandary

A predicament that poses great difficulty in escape; a sticky situation.

quell

To suppress or subdue.

factious

Controversial to the point of creating divisions over opposing viewpoints.

rectitude

Characteristic of a possessing an elevated degree of moral integrity; the quality of being an upright person.

sanguine

An expression of optimistic confidence toward events or how things will turn out.

scurrilous

Outrageously scandalous within the context of defamatory insults.

incendiary

Fiery and explosive; can be used literally to refer to materials associated with fire or metaphorically to describe controversial ideas or acts.

impasse

A point at which no more progress can be made during negotiations.

continence

Self-restraint.

conspiracy

The act of two or more people colluding together for a common goal that may be deemed subversive, illegal or otherwise harmful to the status quo.

obstreperous

A showy display of aggressive defiance.
