10 Things I Can See From Here Summary

10 Things I Can See From Here follows Maeve Glover, a queer teenager who deals every day with severe, life-altering anxiety. One day, Maeve's mother tells her that she will be leaving soon for a six-month-long humanitarian mission to Haiti. As a result, Maeve will need to go live with her father in Vancouver. This sudden transition in living circumstances amplifies Maeve's already excruciating anxiety, which already affected her life in significant ways.

Maeve’s father, a recovering alcoholic, says that he will give Maeve a stable environment. However, he does anything but that: his lifestyle is chaotic thanks to one of his new romantic conquests. Maeve's mother sent her to live with her father in the hopes that the two would be able to repair their relationship. But Maeve's anxiety, and her father's choices, make that impossible.

Amidst this tumult, Maeve's romantic world takes a turn for the better: she meets Salix, a girl whom she quickly starts a romantic relationship with. Salix's patience and understanding are a pillar of comfort and stability in Maeve's life. Because of her anxiety, she never thought that she could have had a normal relationship with another person. Nevertheless, their relationship unfolds gently and slowly in such a way that enables the two to feel comfortable with each other. It is Salix who helps Maeve start to accept herself and manage her mental health better.

As Maeve navigates her relationship with Salix, she starts to learn how to control her anxiety, especially grounding techniques. Her therapy sessions are another avenue where Maeve works towards understanding and ultimately alleviating her anxiety.

Towards the conclusion of the novel, Maeve's mother returns from her trip to Haiti. This forces Maeve to make a decision: will she return home with her mother, or will she stay in Vancouver with her dad and Selix? Ultimately, Maeve decides to stay in Vancouver with her father and Salix rather than return with her mother.
