The Shadow Rising Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

The symbolism of power

Power is symbolized by the Callandor Sword, wielded by Rand al’Thor. When Rand becomes the prophesied leader, he takes possession of the sword to symbolize his authority. Consequently, Rand travels throughout his clan to tell everyone that he is the chosen leader because he can summon rainstorms using his sword.

The dragon tattoos

The dragon tattoos on Rand’s hands symbolizes that he is the chosen prophesied ruler of the Niels. Therefore, when Rand walks, he exposes his hands to the public to see the dragon tattoos on his arms which remind them that he is the Dragon Reborn.

The symbolism of power

The author figuratively uses the character Couladin to symbolize betrayal. Couladin betrays his clan by putting his self-interest first and falsely claiming that he is the true prophesized leader. Therefore, Couladin argues that Rand is a fake leader. However, Rand proves that he is the right leader when he uses his Callando sword to summon rainstorms to prove his power.

The symbolism of vengeance

Vengeance is symbolized by Perrin’s action to fight against Trollocs. Trollocos murders Perrin’s family members, which angers Perrin, who vows revenge. Consequently, Perrin marries Faile to get more soldiers from Queen Morgase to help him fight against Trollocs.
