Why does Ann ask Mr. Loomis question’s and what happens when he answers them ?

Ann is unsure about Loomis and questions him about himself, so she can better gage what kind of man he is. When she asks if he is married... he immediately grabs her by the hand. When she tries to pull her hand away, she accidently hits him in the face.
