Religion and superstition are important themes in the novel. During the plague, villagers find themselves torn between their faith in God and their superstitious beliefs. The villagers find it easier to blame evil spirits than God. People are attacked as witches because of their knowledge of herblore..... the Gowdie woman are even murdered. When the plague continues people turn to potions and charms.
