Revenge is a major theme in the novel Wuthering Heights. This theme is displayed repeatedly throughout the text. Hindley wishes to extoll revenge on Heathcliff for distracting his father's love and attention, Heathcliff wishes to exact revenge against Hindley for his circumstances and mistreatment, and later, Hareton becomes a means for Heathcliff's revenge as a result of Hindley's death. Thus, as you can see, a large part of the plot is moved by the desire for revenge whether justified or unjustified. In the end, revenge is never truly attained, as the act of revenge proves to be a viscious circle in which everyone is effected.
