In a short essay, the last paragraph often can do a lot more than sum up the essay. In an academic essay the body paragraphs tend to lead the reader to a kind of plateau, followed by a "conclusion" with a markedly different feel: the reader knows the essay is ending. But a short essay like an admission essay often has a more organic structure: the reader can carry along in memory pretty much the whole essay at the same time. You can save the feel of a conclusion for the last one or two sentences.
