How did the author use Julian in Part One to highlight the theme of prejudice explored in Wonder?

-Incidents of explicit prejudice as well as those that may be implicit

-Which characters are involved in any incidents of prejudice

-How others respond to incidents of discrimination

Julian: "What's the deal with your face? I mean, were you in a fire or something?" Part I, pg. 28

Julian is the first person to ask Auggie about his face in the novel, and he is also the rudest and most abrupt of all the characters. Julian is thus, established as an antagonist.... a person who will never be Auggie's friend. He is also an example of the fact that not everyone will be kind to Auggie, and that Auggie will need to make the decision to remove these kinds of people from his life and focus on those whom actually care about him.

Charlotte and Jack are also present during this exchange. Charlotte tells Julian off, and Jack defends Auggie.

Another example of discrimination can be found in the people at school who make it a point not to get too close to Auggie..... who avoid touching him..... almost like his condition is contagious.
