Courage was mine, and I had mystery,
Wisdom was mine, and I had mastery:
To miss the march of this retreating world
Into vain citadels that are not walled.

The speaker felt he had mastery and a sense of control during the war. The war was a time when he excelled. Now he feels the reality of war. He sees how war changes the world. Civilization runs away from the war and changes. Soldiers feel left behind.
