What conflicting emotions does Vanka have?

Vanka is torn by his new life as an apprentice to the shoemaker, who feels oppressed by the situation. He misses his life with his grandfather, and balks at the treatment he receives from the shoemaker, his wife, and the other apprentices. He wants to escape but is afraid of the repurcussions to both himself and his grandfather.
