In what way was Booker's admission to Hampton institute a struggle for education?

Booker's admission was only the first step. He had to earn money for tuition, and even after General Armstrong found someone to help with that, Booker still needed money for books and clothing. He worked at the school as a janitor, he spents hours earning the money he needed to travel to Hampton Institute to begin with, and most important of all...... he studied, applying himself to each of the tasks set before him with equal fervor.
