Uncle Tom's Cabin
Uncle Tom's Cabin chapters 28-30, help?
What does Augustine St. Clare mean by "if we (the South) emancipate, are you (the North) willing to educate?"
What does Augustine St. Clare mean by "if we (the South) emancipate, are you (the North) willing to educate?"
For the first question, think of it like this: if the South were to emancipate (set free) the slaves, then there would be lots of black men and women who were without a job and a means to support themselves. Even though slavery was horrible, the masters in the system did provide for their slaves in some ways. If the slaves were to be freed, they would have to find a way or perhaps a skill to support themselves.
The question then is: how would education fit into this? How could schooling have helped the plight of freed ex-slaves? And whose responsibility is it to educate them? That's what Augustine is talking about.
