lesson plans for Uncle Tom's Cabin

I've used Uncle Tom's Cabin many times throughout the years, but as times goes on I've had to modify my plans extensively because of the subject, content, and language in the novel. The fact is, I've almost given up using it because for the last few years I've been hit with "politically correct," problems in terms of parental complaints. My administration is great; they let me roll with whatever I decide.

Differences include; permission slips, comparing and contrasting the reality of Uncle Tom's world with our own, and the use of language. I've taken the politically incorrect language of the time period and had the students compare it to their own use of "modern slang." Amazingly, the students can see the similarities if you really dissect it all. Hope this helped!
