how does jim come to be friendly with long john silver

Long John Silver becomes friends with everyone over the course of the voyage. He compliments Jim and does favors for other members of the crew. The only member of the crew who seems immune to Silver's charm is the Squire. Jim later sees the truth of the matter when he overhears Silver's plan from the apple barrel.
