As the chapter begins, Billy Bones tries to bribe Jim to bring him rum since he is suffering from alcohol withdrawal. Soon after, the blind man leaves and Bill proclaims "Ten o'clock! Six hours. We'll do them yet." He springs up from his seat, but before he can do anything, he falls over dead.
