I suppose the theme of adventure is what has kept this story going for so long. Simply accepting the call to adventure is something that we don't really do in modern times. Jim does accept it and h really becomes his own hero in his journey through life.
Throughout the story there is greed. Almost all characters are wild for getting treasure, but there are some layalists such as, Jim hawkins, Dr. livesey, John squire trelawney and captain Smollett who wanted treasure but they were the ones who actually did not kill any men for the fulfilment of their desire. So the message is a bit clear that greed does not provoke you to kill one another but it actually defines that who you actually are and how much you can go wild for the sake of your desires.
