Violence is an important theme because it permeates Cole's life. Cole is an abused child, who takes his own abuse out on those who are weaker than he is. He wants everyone to be afraid of him.... he attacks without thought. In his own mind, violence is the only way he can be in control, even when facing Spirit Bear..... an animal against which he doesn't have a chance.
