What does Cole's mom feel/do in the second circle justice meeting?

Cole's mother, at this point, has recently separated from the father. She is just now learning to speak for herself. During the second circle meeting she summons the courage to talk about how her son has changed, "I know Cole has changed some...Since the attack, I've seen a difference in his attitude. For the first time he has talked openly with me. I don't know what should happen to him now. I'm just trying to pick up the pieces myself". His mom, much like Cole, is trying to find herself again after years of living with an alcoholic and abusive husband.
